Getting it right - the first time !

It may not be new news, but many major companies are now realizing the absolute necessity of shipping defect-free products.

We blogged a message in 2010 about "The true cost of complaints". This pointed out the tremendous cost in reputation, loss of customers and of money also when you ship a product with defects. Now, in a recent article in "The Salt" blog, the importance of no defects was highlighted by the giant retailer - Costco. They now require vendors to scan food items for foreign objects. X-ray inspection equipment has the ability to detect foreign objects including metal, bone, seeds, pits, etc., while weighing and scanning the product for proper item count and item placement within the package.

Costco points out that an x-ray system, while not cheap, is far less expensive than complaints and law suits. !

PackExpo 2011 - our view

Our crew attended the Las Vegas show and had these comments.

Attendance was very encouraging considering the economy. The customers seemed to be serious prospects for many of the equipment offerings.

Robotics seemed to be a major draw and this was featured in many packaging and loading machinery demonstrations.

Inspection and detection equipment was an active area, with ANRITSU attracting many prospects with their new Dual X low density x-ray system.

NUSPARK ENGINEERING featured their new "Delta Robotic Pick and Place" system - able to load an entire carton of product in one motion.

Computer technology was featured everywhere and ease of operation and quick change "user friendly" systems appear to be on the rise.

While there has been a lot written about "green packaging" and "sustainable packaging" there was a dissapointingly small effort to integrate these efforts in most of the show.

Overall impression was good turnout with serious "lookers". Las Vegas show is growing every year. Considering the economy, people are interested in growth.

Exciting new award announcements

We are pleased with two new achievements here at BELCORP. The first is an announcement by IDEAL-PAK that Belcorp is the "Sales Associate of the Year" for IDEAL. The criteria was a.) number of sales made. b.)dollar volume of products sold. c.) quality of follow-up after the sale and, d.) communication with IDEAL's sales department. IDEAL filling equipment, closers and lidders are superior quality products and we are proud to represent them.

The second award was a recognition by DORNER CONVEYORS that BELCORP was a top seller of DORNER "2300 DustPruf" conveyors for 2011. DORNER is recognized as a preferred manufacturer of a wide variety of conveying systems.

We, at BELCORP are delighted to represent these two fine manufacturers.

DON'T KICK THE CAN !

In the packaging equipment business today, we sometimes overlook the small details in front of us. Technology has provided the tools to build complex automated packaging systems to protect and wrap almost any retail product that can be designed. From complex pharmaceutical sterile packaging to simple cartoning, shrink wrapping, and bundling, the ingenuity of packaging design in this country is unparalleled. But - have you considered that the earliest and simplest packaging is still among the most popular ? For 200 years - the can has ruled the packaging world. In 1810, an Englishman was given a patent to preserve food in a tin vessel. The can was born ! An English immigrant received a U.S. patent in 1825 for manufacturing a tin can. Can manufacturing has grown into a 15 billion dollar industry annually. Steel and aluminum cans have a great reputation in the sustainable packaging business as well. The metal can be recycled over and over with no loss in strength or quality. More than 1.5 million tons of cans were diverted from landfill to recycling in 2009. So, in the future, don't look down on the simple can. It has prospered in the last 200 years ! Remember, cans require - forming, filling and sealing, labeling, conveying, x-ray inspection, check weighing, cartoning, palletizing, etc. etc. You get my point !!!!
